Directions if you are driving from a location outside of the Avalon Peninsula or from Nova Scotia

Back to Hours and Directions Page

Driving to Newfoundland from mainland Canada involves taking the Marine Atlantic ferry from Sydney, Nova Scotia. Throughout the year the ferry runs between Sydney and Port aux Basques, on the west coast of Newfoundland. From Port aux Basques, take the Trans-Canada Highway across the island. The journey from Port aux Basques takes a full day, but the scenery is worth it. During the summer months, there is an additional ferry which goes from Sydney, Nova Scotia to Argentia on the Avalon Peninsula. (For fares and schedules, visit the Marine Atlantic web site). To reach Ferryland from Argentia, take Route 100 to the Trans-Canada Highway, drive east and then either take Route 13 from the Trans-Canada Highway, or Route 10 from St. John's.

Once in Ferryland, the exit for the Colony of Avalon is clearly marked on the side of the road. Please register at the Interpretation Centre before joining the tour of the site.

We have taken care to ensure the maps are accurate as of May, 1999.
