Bowls - Sgraffito
|
Bowls - Sgraffito Ceramics of this type were produced in England throughout the 1600s. The design is scratched through a white slip to expose the red body, then covered with a red glaze. Our reproductions use the same techniques but substitute a safe glaze for the lead glaze use on the originals. The appearance is exactly like the ceramics of the 1600s. The design for these pieces was taken from a bowl made about 1660 and found on the waterfront. The original is currently on display in the Colony of Avalon Foundation's Interpretation Centre. The reproductions come in three sizes: approximate diameters of 9½, 10½ and 12½ inches. Made in Newfoundland.
Price $43.99 Cdn., $53.99 Cdn., and $74.99 Cdn.

Bellarmine Jug
These vessels were produced in the Rhineland region of Germany, and used to store locally produced Rhenish wines. They were sold, with their precious contents, to merchants and traders throughout Europe, and it was through this trade that many such vessels arrived at the colony in Ferryland.
The bearded masks and medallions underwent a series of stylistic changes over the period in which these vessels were produced. This information provides important clues for dating archaeological sites.
Price small $69.99 Cdn., medium $98.99 Cdn. and large $254.99 Cdn.
